Default Starting issues '04 coupe

Hi, I just purchased an 04 Coupe and the one and only key I have is all taped and jacked up. I ordered a new one from dealer and am going to have it programmed Sat. My issue is this...it sometimes won’t start right up it turns over but won’t start. I have to try like 2-3 times sometimes for it to start. Could the key be the issue or do you think it sounds like something else? I’m hoping it’s not anything major. Thanks for any help its appreciated

Don't get your key from a Dealership!!!! How much $850 plus $100 to program it?? Needswings.com will get you one for ALOT less. Also YOU can program that key yourself. Search on the forum for "programming your own key". I don't believe the key is your problem with the starting issue. The starter should continue to turn over until the car starts. Are you saying it disengages ,before it starts?

It just won’t turn over. It tries to but won’t fully start.

I have no car mechanical experience. It sounds like it’s going to start than won’t fully turn over.

"Turning over" means the starter engages and spins the engine ; whether it starts or not. Your question is so vague, I'm sorry I can not give an answer that would help. How many miles on it? Has this just started happening? Have you done anything to it recently?

So the motor cranks but won't start. This sounds like it could be crank position sensor related and maybe fuel pump related due to bad solder joints in the relay control module.

If this were my car I would resolder the RCM and look at the relay contacts. Then I might try a CPS since they are only about $40

I'm going with ^^^ this is the issue.. when changing out my FOB cases.. the chip has slipped about 1/8" out of position and the car wouldn't start.. I'll suggest tap the fob on the red lens end on the dash then try again when it "won't start"..

Mrmiata do you mean to tap the red panic button side on the dash? Or the end of fob itself at the bottm?

DO NOT pay the $60 - $80 bucks "programming fee".. even though they will try their best I'm sure to nail you for it... get in the car.. press the fobs lock or unlock button twice insert key and turn to on position for a couple of seconds... programming is now complete..

In fact.. you can have fun with them.. when they want - insist they need to do this.. "you mean press twice and insert key for that price?"

I’m going to go pick up the key after work and try to do that and see if it works for me. Thank you so much. I’m really hoping this fixes the problem.

The RFID chip inside is programmed to the car when "they" order it.. the only thing left is synchronizing the fob to the car to lock - unlock.. Just like when you replace the batteries and find "fob doesn't work".. covered in the owners manual.. which can be downloaded from here if you haven't already gotten it..

Roll the key to the first position "on" for a couple of seconds.. then you can hit start.. or pull the key out and test "programming" by locking or unlocking.. you should hear the locks - pump kick in.

Just to follow through with something.. you can get a "new" case from Amazon or Ebay for around 10 bucks and transfer key blade.. chip.. and electronics to it for a "like new" key ...

Ok Thanks. You mean for the one I got with the car that’s all messed up? How would I transfer everything?
