Engine won't turn over - ECM P0410 & P0335
 

About 3 weeks ago on my way home from work in stop-and-go traffic my car died. It still had full electric capabilities; the engine just quit. So I threw it in park and restarted it w/ no issue. I drove on home briefly thinking to myself, "That's gonna be a problem someday.".. :rolleyes:

A few days ago it happened for the second time, almost in the exact same spot on the interstate, while going home in stop-and-go traffic. My car, as before, still had full electric capabilities; the engine just quit. But this time it wouldn't turn back over. It would crank. If I turn the key all the way to the right it would keep cranking for about 8-10 times (even after I stop twisting the key) but it would not turn over. So I had it towed back to work. (I work at a bodyshop)
With my technical/mechanical ignorance I used a scanner and decided to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor. It would start but eventually die if left idling & immediately die at about 4000rpms if I gave it gas. I cleared the codes, started it again and it sounded and ran more smooth than I've ever felt it!! (I bought it at around 45,000 miles, it now has 88,000.)
After driving it around the parking lot I decided to try to take it home. I only got about 2 blocks away before it died and wouldn't turn over again.

So, now I'm not sure what to do.

I've seen threads about similar problems here, but they are old and don't make sense to me.
So I'm just starting this thread, from scratch, regarding my issues. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse.

The P0410 code is almost always the RCM. Did you change the crankshaft position sensor with a genuine Bosch one?

No. I just used whatever O'reilly Auto Parts sent me = An "Import Direct 2 terminal crankshaft position sensor, Pt# 19-0462". *shrug*
Should I get a Bosch one and try that before doing anything else? What would you advise my next step be?

For sure change the crankshaft position sensor to a genuine Bosch one. I checked the reviews on the part number you gave me and they were not good. After that you most likely need to change the RCM, there is a member here that repairs them. You can send it to him first or buy a new one then send him the old one.

No wonder the car is mad at you, I'd be pissed too. Go buy the RIGHT part. German Auto Supply has them, as do other places - search "Mercedes SLK320 Crank Positoin Sensor" and buy ONLY the BOSCH part. If you search for the Crossfire, you will never get the car running.

The P0410 is nothing to worry about, get the car running and deal with that later. As you have been told, you can send the RCM to DJ and he can fix that 410 thing for you for around $60.
You can buy them on eBay for around $75 used that might work, or a new one at PartsGeek for $240 - but what ever you do, send your bad one to DJ for rework and keep it in the trunk for next time.

RUBRDUX Agree with the gotta be a BOSCH CPS comments.
If interested in getting your RCM refurbished email tighed1@hotmail.com for the details. That should clear up the P0410 fault.
Dave may chime in and tell you that it could also be the blue check valve or air pump motor, but we all know it's usually that the relay contacts on the air pump relay are burnt that causes the P0410.

New ones can be had for $150 or so, just search this forum they have been mentioned a lot of times, I forget the brand name.

UPDATE 3/16/23: Been five days since I changed the camshaft and crankshaft sensors and not stalled and has been working just fine "so far!" Ordered Bosch sensors and will swap the aftermarket ones, I installed on 3/12/23, with the Bosch sensors.

Very wise. The aftermarket sensors have wasted a lot of owner's time and money when they change to them, and then, weeks later, the car does odd stuff. AT that point, it is assumed the issues is something else, but its the new sensor(s). I don['t know what it is about the BOSCH part, must be manufacturing tolerance or something, but other brands SOMETIMES work fine, but often, they do goofy stuff.
