Default VIDEO - Locked Out of Trunk? How To Override the Lock Mechanisms

OK, Here it is. A video covering how to override the pneumatic trunk lock for Coupes and Roadsters, and how to override the electronic lock for Roadsters only. I even added in a piece on the Emergency Release cable with proof that you cannot override the electronic lock with the Emergency handle.

I think that the lock mechanism is different on the coupe and roadster.
The view from the left license plate light hole will be different.
On the coupe lock mechanism there are no points to which a release cable can be attached.
There are two PDFs on the trunk lock release on the coupes. The lock mechanism is shown out of the Car on the bench. CLICK

Now I am wondering just what the sequence of events was, almost ten years ago in November of 2009 when my "Trunk Lid Jammed" crisis and thread all started.

I know the plastic pawl on the end of the emergency release was broken off in there, and now I think that, when I crawled in thru the bow/lid opening, I pulled the emergency release and broke the pawl.
I never realized I broke it and blamed the 'jam' on this broken part. At least I initially did.

But what I REALLY got from this video is that I was told to remove the PASSENGER light to release the pneumatic lock - and could never figure out how to do that. NOW I know, either I read the instructions wrong (and read "right" for "left", or the writer made a mistake. I will try to open my truck (with the lid closed) using this technique this weekend.

In the interim, I"m making this a 'sticky'.

I have also linked to this thread in "Trunk Lid Jammed" post 1 as well as the last current post.
I've made "Trunk Lid Jammed" a sticky as well, so we have to paths to this thread in two separate forum areas.

On the Roadster, the Pneumatic Lock can be accessed from the LEFT (Drivers Side) License Plate Light Socket opening, and the Electronic "Top in Motion" Lockout mechanism is accessed through the Right (Passenger Side) License Plate Light Socket opening.

As for the Coupe, I don't have one, but based on another video I saw that was done on a Coupe, I could only assume the Pneumatic Lock would be accessed from the Left side as well.

Many thanks for the video, sdultra! This should solve all deck latch issues, except the "broken pivot" problem.

I am still holding my breath, did it work?

Great helpful video. Worked like a charm. Didn't have much luck getting the license plate housing out with a credit card - - had to use a thin flat screwdriver and some brute force. But once I had that out of the way, your video was spot-on. Does anyone have a link to the "permanent" trunk latch fix that is referred to in the video?

Glad the video helped you out. I don't have a link to the the permanent fix, but basically it involves removing the plastic locking end from the piston. You would need to remove the solenoid to accomplish this. HOWEVER, this item is designed to keep you from opening the trunk when the top is in the process of open or close travel so as not to ruin your deck-lid or other parts. It's really not a matter of a part failure. Even if it did fail, the light socket fixture replacement is a lot cheaper than any bodywork you might encounter if you did the permanent override. In the end it's up to you, but personally I don't recommend it

well that is interesting. If your top is up the electronic lockout should have been disengaged anyway. When you try to open the trunk do you get a "floppy handle"? it moves but nothing engages? If so, the pneumatic pawl assembly accessed through the left side is not engaged Watch that part of the video again and see if you can move the pawl into place. Lastly if for some reason the electronic block on the right did not retract on its own the last time you raised the top, the i would drill a hole large enough to get e screwdriver in to move it manually. It take almost no pressure.
