Here is a pic of one that was done. Not a bad idea for carrying DRs and tools to the track.

Re: Why cant we put a hitch on our car?
yea, the only purpose it would serve would be something like posted above.
A small trailer with a set of tires and a small toolbox and such, something like all of my miata buddies seem to do |

Re: Why cant we put a hitch on our car?
I remember someone having done their own hitch design, time to search.
Right now I stick 1 tire in the passenger seat, 2 in the trunk and 1 on the roof when traveling to autocross events. A small tire trailer would be great, so um...yeah   |

Re: Why cant we put a hitch on our car?
just remember that the hitch weight has to be kept small. around 400 lbs i think. the areas were the hitch is mounted arent going to hold a trailer and a 800 lb motorcycle. the stress of the trailer jerking on the mount will have tearing effects over time if overloaded.
tires some small tools and such with a liteweight trailer should be fine. think along the lines of a touring motorcycle trailer |

the car really isnt designed to pull trailers at all. it can be done but to be safe and not cause damage the lighter the better |
Re: Why cant we put a hitch on our car?
the only reason id want to pull anything would be a grill for tailgating....last year we put the largest bin possible in the trunk and filled it with beer and ice, mobile cooler, grill would be next

Re: Why can't we put a hitch on our car?
any pics? or designs to copy? We want to visit yellowstone with our XF and carry our camping gear in a small motor cycle trailer, not a trailer to carry a motorcycle, but one of those slick trailers that motorcycles tow themselves. Their small and have a nice arrowdynamic shape.

Re: Why can't we put a hitch on our car?
I am currently designing a hitch for my Crossfire Roadster.
The plan is to take my wife on a west coast tour for our 25th wedding anniversary in July. I plan to pull a small trailer to accommodate luggage and possibly our bicycles. |
Re: Why can't we put a hitch on our car?
With the help of a couple handy friends we designed a class 1 hitch for my Roadster.
I purchased a small trailer frame from Northern Tool & Equipment http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_7769_7769 I attached two additional cross rails to accommodate the fastening of a car top carrier using the supplied hardware used to attach it to a roof rack. The hitch consists of a flat piece of steel 3"x1/4 thick bolted to the centre frame cross-member and runs directly in line under the muffler. (Two opposing bends were necessary to provide clearance under the muffler) We welded the receiver (square tubing) to the underside of the flat steel with an extra collar heated and pressed over it to prevent any possible deforming at the edges. Then we positioned and welded two 1"X 1/4 thick pieces of flat steel in a "V" angle that hides partly behind the muffler tips and extends to the back side of the trunk. We drilled two holes in each support and sandwiched them between the trunk and plate steel on the inner trunk surface. The longitudinal plate steel handles any push pull of the loaded trailer (Max 500lbs) The V cross- members stabilize any side to side movement or sway. The hitch outlet hardly noticeable standing at the rear of the vehicle The whole trailer with luggage carrier weighs under 200lbs. The hitch also accommodates my bike rack. The carrier is removable from the trailer (4-bolts) for multi-purpose use. I have a class two hitch on my Altima so I can utilize the trailer for odd jobs. We are traveling to the Oregon coast for our 25th anniversary, luggage in tow. Cheers! |
Re: Why can't we put a hitch on our car?
Sounds like you did a great job.
It looks like you tried to add pictures or a link or something, is there any possible way to get some additional pictures of this install? Thanks |
