engine bay mods
Morning guys and gals :-)
Looking at some xfire pics I see some people have 2 metal pipes in the engine bay either side of the cover yet mine are plastic?
I am not mechanically minded so wanted help on knowing what these are called and where could I potentially buy them? Could I fit them myself or leave it to professionals?
Also is it worth chipping my xfire? Any experiences people want to share?

What you may be seeing is a dual CAI ( Cold Air Induction ), but then you would probably not be seeing any engine cover.
Check maxcichon for any post and look at his sig : that is his home-made dual CAI.

Check my gallery, that is a single CAI with a C320 engine cover.

Chipping as in remapping the ECU... Apparently it improves power AND fuel economy?! Am I being a proper newbie and getting too excited over some real BS?

You dont need 2 CAI's, If you do it yourself then you need 2 pipes to run to a Y pipe going into the throttle body, which is the stock setup. Needswings has a Dual and a Single you can buy.
The chips I have seen are BS. The $60 and $40 ones you see that are universal dont do anything at all according to reviews I have read in the past. Get a tune, that is how the ECU can be remapped. There is a sale still I believe for $300. Thats what you want not a homemade money scheme.
Like The Bodyman I have put Magnaflow catback exhausts on both my cars, could give 5/8 bhp.
CAI is my next toy for the SRT6 if possible, then its off to the dyno to be set up. I am hoping to be somewhere near the 400 bhp mark

I'm a process Engineer - pipes/pumps/ducts/etc....what sort of max flow rate are you taking in through the intakes and hence we can do some calcs?
I think it's usually measured in grams per sec g/sec.
cfm is another - but is changed with pressure - ie: is 5% lower at the front intake than at the throttle
body - whereas g/sec is constant.
I guess for the purpose of an intake calc - we can neglect the 5%
say 500cfm*= 14.1m3/min = 16,920 g/min = 4.7g/sec
Whatever it is, you can then calulate the pressure loss through the system. Pressure loss there is lost suck = lost performance - that determines if you need 1x 50mm or 75mm or 2 x 75mm intakes and determines the cross sectional area of your filter as well. I'm guessing if you can keep that loss to <5kPa - you're on the money.

Not to overwhelm the lesson - but if you put it into the context of boost....15psig boost is 105kPag, if you are loosing 10kPa through your intake manifold - that's a 9% power loss.

Rob @ Needswings builds the CAI, both single and dual. He did do all the CFM calcs and testing before distribution... I don't remember them now. It was originally thought a dual was overkill until it was tested, and it does make a difference....
My SRT6 is chipped and de-restricted, done by the dealer who first had it, apparently the best results you can get is 30+ bhp. I have heard that only 10/15 bhp can be made from the standard car so not really worth the cost.

yes - most things have been done before and NW woudl have certainly done all this stuff...amongst others.
I'm just looking for a peak cfm to get my calcs/curiosity started.
