Default Smart Roadster to a Crossfire!!!

Hi All,

Been browsing on here for a while and have now decided that now is the time to part with my Limited Edition Smart Bluewave Roadster.

As you know going from a 700cc turbo to a 3.2 crossfire is going to be a big shock to the system with regards to running costs so I was thinking about fitting an LPG tank. That way its should be cheaper to run compared to petrol costs and cheaper tax (not 100% sure if that is the case).

Not bothered to much about the boot space as with the roadster it has a tiny boot at the front that you can just about get 2 shopping bags in.

Ideally I will be looking for a 04, 05, 55 plated one so one before the tax hike and one with less that 55k miles, in silver, black or ideally grey. Dont really want to be spending more than £4.5k if I can help it.

Has anyone on here had the LPG fitted? What sort of costs were involved? Any problems? Does it really save money?

Many Thanks

if you want info about LPG I rather suspect that the best places for that would be some of the UK based Yank car sites or possibly some of the Landy forums. I seem to recall there was a black one for sale about 4 months ago which had been LPG converted so obviously it can be done but I can't remember any details IIRC a system will set you back up to £2k - that buys a LOT of petrol before it starts to make it financially viable

as for values usual suspects - pistonheads/ebay/autotrader.

hi tommy here is a link to someone who had theirs converted, take your time to read the whole thread, seems like a whole lot of trouble to me, as waylander said £1500-£2000 is a lot of petrol and as our cars do in the region of 25-30 gallon i dont think thats too bad for the engine size...but its your car...

If you buy a sportscar you should be able to buy petrol to run it. Just my 0.02$
Trust me, I have a tuned SRT6 and it could eat whole kuwait in a day or two.
Spend your dollars on good tires, airfilters and a tune. Will make the car run better and get a better mpg.

If I recall correctly the Crossfire Roadster or Coupe has a 60 litre fuel tank. The average price for 95 Octane Petrol here in Blighty is £1.35 per litre. That's £81.00!

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all your messages. The Smart Roadster will hopefully have a new home tomorrow so it will be onwards with the search for a crossfire.

Its the thing ive been putting off, but is there any specialist insurance for the crossfire? or owners club discount anywhere? Some examples would be great. Im 32 years old with 14 years no claims in a low crime rate area parked on a drive with less that 5k miles per year.

Thanks

I pay circa £550 PA for my SRT Roadster through Admiral which I thought was ok considering I have no NCB. (I have been on bikes for the last 7 years)

Good luck with the search! ( any pictures of your smart roadster? Us North Americans never got them and I hear they were pretty rare)

Jeez Dal!!! I just had my renewal for the SRT, £330 with SwiftSure. would they not take your bike NCD? There is a company that will take you driving/riding experience into account. i used them on a 3rd car, will see if I can find them.

Hi Mo,

I tried the motorcycle NCB but they weren't interested the premium started off at £651.00 but I managed to get down because I earn a NCB as a named driver on the wife's policy.

The problem is I've had a company car for the last 12 years with the bikes, I couldn't even use the NCB from the Company Car because I reversed that into a taxi last year

The cars more than worth it so I'm reasonably happy to pay.
