Strange Metallic Noise?
Strange Metallic Noise?
Does anyone know what could be causing the strange metallic noise on the front right of my Crossfire? When I hit the brakes, it sounds like a slight metal to metal noise, almost as if there is a piece of metal rubbing against another piece of metal (it is not, apparently brake "squeal"... it sounds more subdued than that). It also seems to drag on for a while even after the brakes have been released. It is driving me a bit nuts, although I do have to admit that I am a bit OCD... Thanks! Mark

Re: Strange Metallic Noise?
I bought a 2005 roadster (33,000 mi) about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and I have a noise similiar to what you describe, only from the right rear. I'm particularly sensitive to noise and vibration, and this is pretty subtle. I thought it might be a brake pad dragging, but had the wheel off yesterday, and the rotor turns easily, and there's no evidence of any scoring of the rotor. It's like a VERY soft grinding noise, and only at low speeds...Is that like yours, Mark?
Re: Strange Metallic Noise?
No, mine is much more metallic sounding than that... almost as if a person was to put a piece of paper thin metal between the pads and the rotors... it could just be the pads themselves, I guess, but I have never had this kind of metallic sound come from pads before...
As regards your issue, I am sure that there are those out there that know much, much more about these things than myself, but I would suspect a failed wheel bearing. Failed bearings mimic what you are describing perfectly.
Best Regards,
Mark

Re: Strange Metallic Noise?
Yeah, I thpought of wheel bearings, but this seems different from wheel bearing noise that I've heard in other vehicles, in that it is soft to begin with...5-15 mph, then goes away completely over 20. My wife keeps asking, "What noise?", and threatens to put me back on my Thorazine. I'll have 'em checked anyway; better to be safe...
Re: Strange Metallic Noise?
Thorazine, Halidol, Lithium... hey, whatever works. Better living through chemistry, I always say. Wheel bearings can be a somewhat difficult thing to deal with since oftentimes they sound at low speeds but seem to disappear at higher... the reason being, of course, road noise, unless you have one that is REALLY BAD. I feel like it is something to look into, nevertheless. The other possibilty, of course, is the CV joint. Have you looked at the boots to make sure that they are not cracked/ leaking?

Re: Strange Metallic Noise?
That makes sense as to the type of sound that I am hearing. I seriously doubt that there could be any issues with the pads themselves since the sound drags on even after the brakes are let up on (and the fact that I gear brake and the fact that I only have 14,000 miles on this baby). I will try that and let you know what I find out. I think that it will probably be self-evident after the wheel is actually removed I could just take it over to the dealership, but what fun would that be????
Re: Strange Metallic Noise?
I took off all of the wheels and bent the brake shields until I knew that there was no way that they could interfere with the rotor movements (the rears appeared to be especially close to the disks... it also gave me a chance to clean the insides of the wheels quite nicely!!!!). Nothing has changed, however. Another curious thing about this is that when I hit bumps in the road, the noise comes back intermitently, as though the torquing from the road surface is causing this as well. However, it is definitely?? related to the braking system since it always shows itself there. Could it just be squeeky pads? What would I do to remedy such a situation? I am not the worlds best mechanic, and to tell you the truth I have never changed pads myself (although I do have access to quite a few tools to do so). Thanks so much for continuing this thread!!!!!
