As far as the car not making a sound when you lock it, the alarm siren has probably been removed to prevent battery drain.
The original alarm siren did not chirp when the doors were locked and unlocked with the keyfob
Most have replaced the alarm siren and the replacements do chirp with the locking and unlocking of the doors
