The single wrench is only there for a few seconds after starting her up. If I don't need to change oil, then NO wrench appears at all?

Single wrench represents A service: oil change, check all fluids, filters etc. 2 wrenches represents B service: same thing as A service with the addition of rotating the tires and probably a few more items (these are listed in the owners manual). This type of scheduling is characteristic of MB services. The FSS does need to be reset manually though (not automatic as noted before). This is also explained in the owners manual.
