Smile Re: Understanding frustration...

OK,
I believe I have this whole wind noise problems solved (for me at least). There was a post a while back where someone mentioned using weather stripping to fix the noise problem but didn't provide a whole lot of details. Well I had some weather stripping and a free hour yesterday so I decided to find out.

If you open the door and look at the molding around the roof, you will notice that there is a large area between the top and bottom sections of the molding. It's large enough for an average person to be able to slip an index finger into.

The whole gist of this fix is to shove something into that area that will cause the bottom portion of the molding to "squish" and bow outward, making better contact with the window when it is closed.

First thing I did was make some "shims" out of 1/4" thick weather stripping that were about 2 inches long. I then peeled the sticky paper off the back of some and made four stacks of two pieces of stripping. Each is two inches long and 1/2 inch high.

I shoved each of the stacks into the molding at even intervals and then went for a drive. The wind noise was greatly reduced! After readjusting these stacks a bit I have been able to almost completely eliminate the noise.

Once I get things adjusted the way I want I'll make a longer stack and use the stick tape to install it permanently. I used black weather stripping so it’s not noticeable unless you look for it. Best of all I don't have to submit my car to the whims of the ham-fisted wrench turner at my local dealer.
