I have a slk spare for the longer trips as it gives a little piece of mind. I have heard horror stories about crossfires getting stuck for days trying to get a replacement.
As far as where to put the flat, I have not had to try yet but would rather have that issue than the alternative. Even if it does not fit completely in trunk as spare does, it could be wedged in and then hatch strapped down.
