I also had leaves trapped which made a rattling noise everytime I turned the fan on. I ended up pulling the fan motor out...not that big of a job. If you open the hood, the plastic cover over the vent intake at the ends are fluted. That's how leaves and especially pined needles in my case were able to work themselves into the fan compartment.
