if properly designed the reverse cone can help air flow properly into the intake path... for a good example look at apexi filters... that inner plastic cone can help intake flow by maintaining air velocity as the air does not slam into each other...

the K&N like design you have shown is merely for increased possible CFM (raw flow of air possible through the element) and will net gains IF the engine cannot flow enough CFM through the standard cone filter ... so on a forced induction application that needs more flow you will see a gain with the second filter likely but on a NA crossfire either one is fine and is nowhere near the best filter you can use on the car... either is better than the stock panel filters however.

look into apexi filters... will require more work to get them to fit though...
