Re: Lighted sill plate installation help !
crossfirefrank,
First off there are not really any 'shortcuts' to this install. The steps outlined in the Chrysler installation instructions are correct, if a bit vague.
Here's some help.
1. To remove your old sill plates, get under one end of them and pull up sharply. There are clips on them that may stay on the body steel. These will have to be removed for the new plates to go in. The new plates have new clips.
2. The side that the transformer (little yellow box) goes on, is the right or passenger side (in the USA). The thing that makes the install easier is to move the passenger seat all the way forward and then lean it all the way forward until it's touching the dash if possible. Do this for the left side as well as you will need to get the wiring for the sill plate through.
3. If you can pull your carpet up without this step, fine, if not... proceed. Torx screws that hold in the metal hold down and plastic surround where the seatbelt comes out of the rear pillar and there is one or two semi-hidden torx screws too. Just take your time with these if you need to remove them as the plastic piece will break if you miss a screw. Not badly, but it's annoying.
4. The wiring codes are in shorthand PNK = Pink, etc. Basically they want you to splice into a hot and the door pin grounds for the brown wires. If you have never soldered before... go grab a friend that has.
5. Getting the wire across is described as needing a puller or grabber type tool. You can do this with a stiff piece of wire such as a coat hanger. First straighten the coat hanger, then bend over about 1 or two inches on one end and pass that through the carpet area described. Next using masking or electrical tape, wrap the wires you need to pass once around the coat hanger loop and tape in place. Then just slowly fish them back through the carpet.
Hope that helps.
