The original roadsters didn't have windows. They had side curtains that could only be installed when the top was up. We are sooo spoiled.
When I went to college, I had a 1960 MGA (a true roadster just like the one in Animal House) that had side curtains. They were "free standing" and had there own metal frame stitched into the canvas, and weren't attached to the top in any way. They could be left on with the top down. It would look like crap...but you could still do it.
