All you have to do is: pull up the leather boot cover and turn the retainer nut clockwise and down and the shift **** will pull right off. If you have found that the round retainer nut has come off then you are right where you want to be, as a small hose clamp replaces that nut and it will not come off again.
I wanted to get a new one anyway so how it came off didn't really matter. It did take 2 weeks for me to get the new **** and boot cause of miscommunication b/w me and the vendor but it was only a minor annoyance until this one came. I actually prefer the thinner **** over the OEM one.
