Not really since the airbox is only so big, it's not very free flowing unlike straight 3" pipes or 2 3" pipes. Even if the pipe holds less than the airbox, there is less restriction allowing more air to move into the manifold.
The quicker the air can get into the manifold the cooler it will be. Cold Air Intakes I would believe do not rely mainly on sucking in cooler air but moving air into manifold quicker like I stated so it does not heat up, think of cold Air as the location of the filter along with the amount of time the air stays in the pipe.
The only example I can think of is blowing on your hand. When you blow out through a smaller opening in your mouth producing faster airflow the air moving over it feels colder. Now when you blow out at a slow rate (with your mouth open more) it's hotter. Might not be the best example but it's the easiest way of picturing it.
