I'm not sure it was due to EPA regs, but because it's a favorite ingredient in the production of Meth-heads.
Speaking of Meth, have you guys tried mixing methanol into your gasoline? It has a very high octane rating and you can buy it for $2.75-$4.00 here in LA. Heck you can also mix 5% nitro methanol into the alky, for quicker revs, more responsive throttle.
