The Tire Fit that comes with the car is suppose to be safe for the TPM sensors, so the literature states, however, I am not sure how well it works.

Unless there is a huge gash the plugs can fill most flats even those on the side walls can be fixed in an emergency. I have used plugs to patch a 1-1/4" hole in a side wall of my truck when rock punched through out in the middle of no where with no cell phone reception. I am glad you mentioned the pliers since I don't even have a tool kit in the car something I need to add before the next road trip.
