Steve, not trying to start a flame war here but if you change the oil according to the instructions there will be no nasty crap left in the oil pan. The suction probe goes all the way to the lowest part of the oil pan in the same spot as the drain plug. So other than stripped drain plug threads and hot oil all over your hands & the floor there's really no difference between the two methods.

I recall reading somewhere that the M112 engine was originally designed with no drain plug at all because vacuum extraction was the preferred method of oil removal.
