Believe it or not this happens all the time. Companies do lose track of their inventories, especially those that came off the assembly line for not passing staging inspections. In fact the company I work for is installing RFID solutions for many auto manufacturing including Toyota and MB to help them keep track of their cars all the way until they get on the trains or trucks.
