Go to a salvage yard and get a hood to experiment with then swap it out and see what kind of reaction you get. I think the strakes and ribs are actually there for structural stability for the large piece of sheet metal. Without some structural support, I'm guessing there would be significant warping in a short time. The only other option would be adding underside bracing and supports and that would add weight and perhaps wouldn't fit in the already crowded engine compartment.
