My guess would be a combination of the following three reasons:

1. Sophisticated gear selection computer electronics allows for higher efficiency than when a human shifts a manual.

2. The lockup torque converter reduces the slippage inefficiencies typically experienced by automatic transmissions.

3. The autostick equipped Crossfire weighs just 23 pounds more than the 6 speed.
