Re: to be honest
For Airbags, patent applications date back to as early as 1951. A german (surprise surprise) named Linderer and an American named Hedrik started these studies and applications in that year. The first production cars to offer them was a fleet of experimental Fords, I can't recall the model they were based on. These were never sold. In 1973 GM offered them as an experimental study option or trial on some Chevrolet models sold only to the US Government. The 1973 Olds Toronado was offered with a passenger side only airbag option, and was the first car to be offered to the public with this option. The first true mass production cars with a driver's side air bag option were the 1975 and 1976 Olds 98 and Buick Electra 225 and Roadmaster I think was also included in that. It was only available for those two years. The first successful mass market Air bag was on the 1984 Ford Tempo believe it or not.
As for Anti-Lock Brakes...
I can't recall who was responsible for inventing them, but the first mass market production car with ABS was the 1969 Ford Thunderbird. It used a primitive transistor controlled hydraulic system the was very heavy and took up a lot of space. The "ABS Computer" was located between the firewall and glovebox. The glove box was barely big enough for gloves as the computer that controlled the brakes was about the size of three shoe boxes... There was also another "box" in the trunk that had something to do with it, but I never had to mess with that one.
I actually had a 1970 Thunderbird. Trust me, I know they actually worked. I had to use them to stop that huge boat on more than one occasion. Pretty interesting system actually. I had to tear it apart and fix a few things when I first took possession of it.
These are my answers to the best of my personal knowledge. If I'm incorrect please let me know. I like to learn new things.
