I did the same thing. I actually prefer to have just the polished lip and a flat black center. I've always though that "vanity" exhaust tips with much smaller round opening that you can see inside look bad. No all you notice is the tip and not the actual opening... Much cleaner look in my opinion. And less to maintain...
