The head unit I've been looking at is the JVC KD-BT1 which has the same features but even includes built in Bluetooth for both phones and audio devices.
When I try to purchase it from Crutchfield I get the message that the deck needs to be wired directly to the speakers. Then I visited a local audio shop and they said they had issues getting a wiring harness for the Crossfire.
That is a nice looking head unit.
All you need is the Volkswagen Plug adapter that Crutchfield supplies with the deck. If you wire it up like the wiring harness diagram shows, then it works fine. The only other thing that is needed is the antenna adapter which they also provide. Total install time took me about 30 minutes taking my time...
I got the same story from shops as well, and I found that they are just ignorant and don't know what they are talking about. Just another side affect of owning a rare and misunderstood car I guess. Trust me, you'll be fine. The instructions are here
