I figured out that it is def. injector tick on MY car. Mine does what you are describing. I took a LONG mechanics stethoscope to mine recently, and I'm 100% positive its injector tick. The valves were actually very quiet under the valve covers. Put the probe up to the fuel rails and it's DEAFENING through the stethoscope...
