Is there a usual time when these stock bosch pumps fail? What causes the failure, the excessive heat?

If you pull apart the failed pumps, you'll notice a lot of carbon build-up and excessive wear on one side. The general consensus (I think!) is that the horizontal mount position for this pump is not optimal. It would probably last longer if it were mounted vertically - however, we just don't have the space in there to do that.
