One other thing... while it is improbable that you could damage your paint using the PC 7424 (remember to always keep the PC 7424 moving), start by polishing/cleaning/buffing a small and unnoticeable area first, and when you get the feel for the PC 7424 then migrate to the more noticeable areas.
Have fun!

Great advice! I learned how to detail myself using David's guide. There are tons of great products out there that can all give you great results, but practice and having an understanding of how each product works is key. As you can see, many people have gotten good results using different products. I personally have recently switched to the Menzerna line of polishes, and all I can say is WOW! Yes, there is alot of dusting, but the results speak for themselves.
Personally though, I don't think the PC can damage paint that easily. It's the rotary that you have to worry about, especially at over 1,000 rpm's. I can run a PC along multiple surfaces without worries, while the rotary can destroy black trim (don't ask how I know).
As for product sling mentioned earlier, spread the product along the surface, as if buttering a piece of bread, with the machine turned OFF before turning the machine on. Do a quick pass or two at a speed of 1-2, then crank it to 6 for swirl removal (don't be afraid of speed 6). I believe I talk about polishing with the PC in my "How to Detail a Crossfire" sticky thread.
