My low fuel light has always come on when I hit the 1/6th mark on the fuel gauge. Based on my gas mileage of 22-23 mpg of mixed driving, I would feel safe driving 40-50 miles. However, the key word is driving. I suspect that in Manhattan you may do a lot of sitting in traffic. Your situation may make it a close call.
