(1) <a> Just grasp the edges of the cover at the back and front, alternating and pull slowly but firmly straight up. There are like 4 clips holding it down, ease them each a little at a time.

<b> You are right, the filters will be on the "hot side". There is another ongoing link where a fella' has routed, "with no modification" using tubes down and below to the lower grill area.

(2) Yes, you remove the OEM filters from the air box.
