I have seen this work. I had a customer with a used Dodge Ram truck that had a similar issue with a vinyl door panel. I watched the repairman do exactly what you are describing and in about 2 minutes it was gone. I've never had the need for this type of repair, but I would have a professional do, I don't think I would have the guts to try it myself.
