Question breaking in new speakers?

is it true i have to break in a new subwoofer slowly before i can start really turning it up?
my infinity sub is messed up. now the guy i purchased it from says i blew it. but i had second thought when i purchased it because i got it from downtown los angeles and the box seemed to have been retaped. it worked for 3 days then the glue came apart. i noticed a rattle and it was the sub unglued from the rubber. no refund no exchange so i said screw this i went and got a bran spankin new keenwood. but before i left he said i didnt give it time to break in is this true?
ps... i didnt buy the kenwood from the same place never again will i shop in downtown yhea the price is cheaper but now that i think about it i think they sell defective stuff...
