They started working on them? Chrysler would probably save money by contracting all warrenty to work to MB dealers. Think about all the labor hours and wrong parts being replaced before they get it right, not to mention loaner cars for up to two months for things as simple as a seat belt switch.

In all seriousness though I would rather have the bumper to bumper. You are not likely to have powertrain issues. From my previous experience with a Mercedes with the same engine and trans and past participation on the MB forums, the real issues will be electrical assuming you take care of the car.

Is this extra bumper to bumper backed by Chrysler or is it some third party that the dealer makes some extra money by selling? I have had really bad luck with third party warrenties and don't believe a word the salesman tells you if you question this. I wouldn't buy an ectended warrenty from a third party unless the dealership is willing to quarantee the warrenty if the warrenty company goes out of business. I have bought two of these in the past from dealers on new cars. The extended didn't kick in untill the factory warrenty was over. by that time the warrenty company was out of business.
