Try pushing down on the outer lip (above the release handle)...someone may have adjusted the bump stops too far and it is keeping it from releasing. Also, use your key fob remote and cycle the lock system a couple of times and see if you can hear it lock/unlock from the back (if not, also apply a little downward pressure and try again).
