This is actually quite common. Many GM cars have not had auto transmission dipsticks for years. My wife's '99 Olds Cutlas and my Daughter's '03 Sunfire both are without a trans dipstick. The dealer can install one (for a price of course).
I agree that this is a very customer hostile way to save a couple of dollars on the BOM.
