Default Lancer Evolution / WRX / SRT6 - On a Sunday Drive

I finally had some time to go out and put some miles on my SRT6 since installing the SL55 Intake system. It’s a nice sunny day and I start out a the same highway I was ticketed on last Saturday so I take nice and easy for a few miles before I get to Grimes Canyon Road (Hwy 23), turn left and have a spirited little run (but not to spirited) before I get to the canyon section.

Just my luck I get stuck behind a slow Honda Civic thru the canyon (can’t pass on these switchbacks) I finally get a chance to pass when we hit the straight entering Fillmore. I decide to head East on 126 – a nice 4 lane blacktop highway. For those who don’t know this highway – It meanders through orchards – miles and miles of Orange, Lemon and Avocados has far has you can see. I maintain the speed limit through town and then set my CC at 65 once outside the city limits. I drive along for about a mile (very light traffic) and approach two cars doing 55 MPH (one in each lane) and I can see that the car in the left lane is slowly passing the other so I get behind him. Soon I see two cars coming like gangbusters in my rear view and I think OH YEA!

I see that my new company is a Lancer and WRX having a little fun with the Lancer right on my rear bumper. As I pass the car in the right lane, I signal to get in front of him so I can pass the car that was in front of me – but maintain my speed. The Lancer then gets behind me and so on. When there is enough room for the Lancer to get back in the left lane, he jumps on it – has do I – and the race is one.

We leave the WRX behind has he still needs to get pass the other cars and I began to pull from away from the Lancer. By the time I reach 150 MPH I am a good 5 or 6 car lengths ahead and still pulling away. I then start to slow down to the as I see traffic ahead. Soon I am doing the legal limit behind a small group of fine, law abiding motorist and I signal and do the legal routine to pass. No need to endanger innocent motorists. Once in front I wait for the Lancer to clear and games on again only this time he waits until he is along side me to “go green”; and again I dust him from the start and begin to pull away.

About 7 miles later we approach the only traffic signal from Fillmore to Interstate 5. I slow down and the light turns red so I stop in the right lane. Apparently the WRX had passed the Lancer and pulled up next to me. Light goes green and it’s back to racing action – He was little quicker then the Lancer and stayed on my tail to about 70-80 MPH and then I started to really pull away and had about 2 to 3 car lengths on him by 140 MPH when we approached a car in the left lane (his lane) he pulled behind me and after we passed he went back in the left lane trying hard to catch me (I had slowed just little as we passed) and soon there were a 3 cars in front of us, two in the left lane and one in the right lane with the car in my lane (right) in front of the others.

Now – I could have made a move between them but, racing on open road is one thing – involving other cars in traffic is another, especially at those speeds, so I brake hard and slow the SRT way down but I guess the WRX was not going to be beat, so he passes to the left across the broken double yellow line into oncoming traffic. (I thought for sure I was going to see something really horrible) but the oncoming car swerved out of the way and the WRX was gone. The Lancer had caught up to me and decided he to would slow for the traffic. He rolled down his window and gave me the thumbs up. Once we were past the traffic he took off and I decided to stay with the traffic figuring I had my fun, made my point and did not need to press my luck. But it was fun.

Final Score:

SRT-6 = 2 Lancer = 0 WRX = (-5)
