This sounds strange, but I heard it was important to tell the insurance company that the object hitting your car flew directly off the vehicle in front of you, and did not hit the ground first. Apparently if the object is on the ground, then some insurance companies assign the fault to you...that you hit the object. Whereas, if it never hit the ground, then technically it hit you.

I don't know if this is true or not, but it can't hurt in a pinch.
