Unlike many of the fine outstanding societal members of this forum

.....I have had an
abundance of speeding tickets from the time I got my license. It has ebbed somewhat in later years. I was putting about 36,000 miles /year on my car with work for the last 10 years.
In BC , if you get a couple tickets they surcharge you an addtional amount equal to the ticket and payable before receiving any motor vehicle services. I think the minum ticket is 150.00 now.
They used to offer a 10%/year safe driving discount however they changed that to 5%/year while a provincial nursing strike was on. People found out at time of licence/registration renewal.. Now they are going back three years for "at risk" drivers should they get any additional infractions from time of the mailed warning. Insurance companies are only happy receiving money, and make everyone feel guilty or label them bad drivers when they collect on a service they paid for.
Some of the retired people who seldom drive have the maximum discount accumulated from years past, and can get into 3 accidents before their premiums go up. A kid could have a 400% surcharge to pay after just a couple. A new driver with zero collision theft, or comprehensive coverage will pay 1200/year.
Young drivers start out zero rated, and have a graduated licence program restricting number of occupants etc. I feel sorry for them because if they get into an accident their premums rocket.
My son drove some kids home who were too drunk to drive, on two separate occasions and was given a ticket for too many occupants. he was doing the responsible thing. He now has to drive accident and ticket free for two additonal years. He has no accidents no speeding tickets, and is a very competent car and motorcycle driver.
To be fair, speeding tickets should be rated according to income. Currently the rich don't care because their money will buy them out of anything. And who is to say that paying money is restitution. I think there should be the option of doing community work. A kid working part-time making 8:00/hr has to work 30 hrs just to pay his ticket let alone the insurance.
I think many people become old in mind and body and forget what it was to be young. But the world if full of people who love rules and regulations. They need them , it's what defines them. If you want to be reminded of how many rules we have to follow go to a place like Thailand where you can leave your passport and drive off on a motorcycle. No licence required.
We have all these cars capable of high speeds and no-where to drive them. How much sense does that make? If there was any seriousness to curbing speeding, cars could be equipped with a chip that controls the maximum speed per a signal received from hwy transmitters. Speeding tickets = tax
It's a proven fact that accidents are minimized by more traffic light enforcement and not by stopping a lone vehicle speeding down the highway.
The good point about drunken drivers rings especially close to home for me. I was the victim of one when I was only 17.
i know, i know we have choices...fall in line like a bunch of lemmings or pay the price.
God I feel good after that B session....That was worth 5 cents.
