I've driven a stick for 25 years, starting with my 66 Mustang, and I was taught never to use first except at a complete stop. If the tire is moving at all, I feather the clutch in 2nd gear and hardly ever get that lugging sensation.

It's part of the fun of driving a stick...finding that sweet spot at just the right amount of gas and clutch.
