I can hear crackling from the speakers every now again, so i'm wondering if I need a new head unit or if I just need the small black box in the boot.

I'm not sure about the black box you mention - sounds like something aftermarket. I had problems with my factory stereo and it turned out to be the amp under the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle. The dealer replaced it and the problem has been resolved. Before it was fixed the stereo would come and go, sometimes coming back on after turning the car off and on. That was brutal.

I would check to see if the stereo wiring has been modified, but failing that, you might need to swap in a new power amp.

In the end I kept the power amp but put in a new head unit.
