currently the stereo powers on when you put the key in, it comes up with Chrysler, then it goes onto radio, but it doesn't play anything and all the buttons on the head-unit of the stereo are inactive, nothing works on it, not even the power button. I'm not sure about the black box you mention - sounds like something aftermarket. I had problems with my factory stereo and it turned out to be the amp under the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle. The dealer replaced it and the problem has been resolved. Before it was fixed the stereo would come and go, sometimes coming back on after turning the car off and on. That was brutal.
I would check to see if the stereo wiring has been modified, but failing that, you might need to swap in a new power amp.
In the end I kept the power amp but put in a new head unit.
