The_Cohort,

A resister may work but I was personally thinking that zenner diode may be a better method. I would use one that has a breakdown voltage slightly lower then the triggering threshold of your LEDs. You may have to experiment a little since I haven't' worked with zenners for year where they actually start to avalanche; above or below the target voltage.
