Chris:

Putting a resistor in parallel will drop the over all resistance of the load that the battery source sees but there will still be 12V across the LED package. Now I am not sure exactly how the LED package is configured; whether all the LEDs are in parallel with a single current limiting resistor or whether each LED has its' own current limiting resistor. IMO series would be the preferred method over parallel to reduce the current flow through the LEDs.
