If I'm not mistaken, ebay has taken on this problem and initiated changes which resulted in a huge boycott by sellers.
There is a difference between walking into a Starbucks or other store and buying a product as compared to buying sight unseen from some remote internet seller. The system has flaws, but a lot of people are using it.
