Probably the most dramatic difference you'll see w/o breaking the bank on suspension parts/installation. 45 series tires on 17's would be an acceptable fit and there are a number of inexpensive 45 series tires that ride pretty softly. Check the reviews on tire rack. Worse case if you don't like the 17" wheels/tires, you can always just sell them on EBay.
very true!! i drove a cady cts for a few days, it was my friends. it rode just "like a cady", very smooth, then he put low-profile tires on it (about the same series as the x-fire), rode like crap.
