goo-gone, and wd-40 definately work the best to take off the adhesive. as for your 'ghosting' problem. meguiar's makes a product that can deal with that... though for the life of me the name is escaping my memory... il look it up and edit the post... wait 5.

it is called meguiar's scratch x... i believe this may help, though i don't know if it will truly resolve just a faded paint issue... if it doesnt work it will come in handy for any future scratches... who knows.
