Hmm, well I didn't have a cracking sound, but I did have a "sound" when I first got it.
Basically on almost full lock to the right, I would get a grinding/scraping coming from the front right wheel arch area. It was slight, but it was there and only at one specific point that was most often turned through so as not really noticed.....well almost.

I would describe the noise as similar to gravel being flicked up into the wheel arch, which is what I put it down to at first.
I took the car to an industrial estate where I had plenty of room to play and found the 'sour' spot whilst slowly turning the wheel and driving slowly forwards.
I got out of the car and inspected the front wheel arch. The issue was that the plastic wheel arch liner (rear part, sorry I do not know the correct nomenclature) was bent creating a bulge which just touched the tyre at a certain point in the turning cycle of the steering wheel.
I loosened off the wheel arch liner fixing bolts, straightened it out (wedges in tight, quite a job not helped by resticted access with the wheel still in place!) and retightened the bolts. Job done, problem gone
Might be worth a look, just in case?
