I agree - run like a scalded dog away from Vista until you absolutely have to make the jump - and I also would second that it is likely a Vista issue. In fact there is a class action lawsuit against microsoft about vista ready vs vista capable, in that lawsuit there were some interesting microsoft internal e-mails...check this out:
