After wearing a hole in my thumb from mashing the darn button about two dozen times, I finally got it.

IIRC, the "trick" is in the second step. Forget the "4 seconds...within one second" stuff. What they mean is: "almost instantaneously press the ****/button twice." When you get the status displayed, you're golden. The rest is cake.
