The tape acts as an insulator, that's it! The TSB for this mod was to replace the latch mechanism with one that has some insulating plastic or rubber on it. The tape does the same thing and will last indefinitely. It only takes 3 minutes to do and I have NO RATTLES anymore. The hatch could be bouncing all over the place, but I don't hear it at all, even over pot holes and speed bumps. If my camera was working, I'd post some pics. You wrap about 4 turns of black electrical tape ($1.00 per roll) around the latch bar. This is the part that is attached to the car, not the hatch. It is a black steel bar that runs fore and aft located in the hole where the hatch latch goes. Open the hatch, you can't miss it!
